Single Volume History of the Second Afghan War

For all discussions relating to the First and Second Afghan Wars of 1839-42 and 1878-80.

Single Volume History of the Second Afghan War

Postby thequestingvole » 05 Dec 2015 01:41

I'm mainly a wargamer and I have a passing understanding of the North West Frontier and Afghanistan generally, but I was wondering if anyone could recommend a single volume history of the Second Afghan War? Something very much aimed at the newcomer. I've read a little about the First Afghan war and also the history of the Malakand Field Force, but nothing in between.

Many thanks.

Yours,

The Vole

There are a number of historical books about the 2nd Afghan War which are available online (free), including single volumes, or part of a volume. See the FIBIS Fibiwiki page 2nd Afghan War, section Historical books online.

(then click on the title to access the digital book)

Thank you very much Maureen. An embarrassment of riches there - I downloaded the official history.

As a comparitively recent (late C20th, reprinted in 2002) Michael Barthorp's 'Afghan Wars & the North-West Frontier 1839-1947' is an concise, well-illustrated overview of British operations on NWF and in Afghanistan.

Vole,

Excellent replies already above!

Here's one more -- in my humble opinion the best one-volume history of the Second Afghan War, compact but thorough: "The Road to Kabul - the Second Afghan War 1878-1880," by Brian Robson, originally published in 1986, as seen here on Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/The-Road-Kabul-Second-Afghan/dp/1862274169

Also, just in case you're not yet aware of it, here's a link to Garen Ewing's fantastic Second Afghan War history site, which is a fantastic overall resource:

http://www.garenewing.co.uk/angloafghanwar/

Of particular value for us wargamers is the "regiments" page, which lists every British and Indian regiment which served in the war, along with any battle honours they earned during the campaign. Here's another link directly to that page:

http://www.garenewing.co.uk/angloafghanwar/waroffice/regiments.php

Last and also least, here's a link to my own humble blog, which features a lot of Second Afghan War model terrain, miniature armies, and historically-based scenarios:

Book wise, I would go with Robson's The Road to Kabul myself.

Thank you very much for the advice. I think N&M have the Robson for a bargain price at present. I actually picked up the Savage Frontier by Richards this morning for the princely sum of two quid, though the maps are non existent.

Guru, I have long been an admirer of your terrain setup, though I must admit your commitment to accuracy is rather greater than mine. I will be using my Zulu war boys in red coats, wargaming the legend so to speak.

Thanks again.

Would anyone venture an opinion on The March to Kandahar by Atwood?

I have to confess that, although I do have a copy of this book, I have yet to read it.
