Private Charles Errington 59th Foot

Postby Paul knowles » 12 Nov 2017 21:26

Hello forum, Can you please help?

Does anyone have the medal roll for the 59th Foot for Afghanistan? I'm trying to find a Private Charles Errington 59th Foot who served at Ahmed Khel.

Many thanks

Paul

I've searched the roll on Ancestry and no one of that name was found either serving in the 59th nor in serving in Afghanistan.

Paul

His service papers are available on line at FMP and confirm participation in the Afghan campaign.

Pte 1139/277 Charles Errington 15th Bde, 59th later East Lancs Regt.
Served in India and Afghanistan. Afghan medal with 'Ahmed Khel' clasp.

He is possibly on the roll as Charles HARRINGTON but I couldn't see him.

Tony.

Hi Tony,

Many thanks for taking the trouble to look. I have found his papers and it is certainly the right chap. His medal is engraved 15B 1139 Pte C. Errington 59th Foot.

I did notice that his paperwork at one stage mentioned 'Harrington' hence the issue with the medal roll?

Would you know why he originally enlisted into the 15th Brigade and not the 59th Foot?

Best regards

Paul

Paul
As part of the Cardwell Reforms of the 1870s, where single-battalion regiments were linked together to share a single depot and recruiting district in the United Kingdom, the 59th was linked with the 30th (Cambridgeshire) Regiment of Foot, and assigned to district no. 51 at Burnley Barracks in Lancashire (15th Brigade). On 1 July 1881 the Childers Reforms came into effect and the regiment amalgamated with the 30th (Cambridgeshire) Regiment of Foot to form the East Lancashire Regiment with the 59th Foot becoming the 2nd Battalion of the East Lancashire Regiment.

I'M guessing this was his local Depot, not too far from Chesterfield.

Hi Tony,

Thank you for the information, I now have a much clearer picture of his enlistment. Its a great privileged to build up a picture of those behind the medals and I really appreciate your help to piece together Charles Erringtons. Best regards Paul
