'Victoria Rifles' officers sword

Postby Paul knowles » 29 May 2017 11:00

Hello, Can anyone please help? I'm trying to find the identity of the original owner of a 1827 pattern Rifle Officers sword. It is engraved to the 'Victoria Rifles' and has the family crest 'Ride Through' which I have found to be that of Lord Belhaven and Stenton. The owners initials are engraved within the crest and appear to be WGF? The blade is marked to Busain & Co of 8 Gerrard Street in London, who traded in that name from 1851 to 1858, so the original owner was most likely was one of the founding / first officers of the Victoria Rifles? I have attached a photo of the crest and initials and would be delighted if anyone could shed some light on who this could be. Many thanks, Paul

Hi Paul,

I suggest that the middle initial is I or J, but definitely not G.

Paul,

Do you consider the original owner of the sword was in the Canadian Army?

Hello, many thanks for the reply and for spotting the I or J. I had considered the Canadian Army but part ruled it out because of the dates the sword retailer sold the sword coinciding with the founding of the Victoria Rifles in London and also the family crest, maybe I'm wrong?? Paul
