Lt CORRY, d1839 Shikapoor (Sindh)

Postby acanthus » 01 Apr 2015 22:02

Hi,

I'm searching for any details regarding a Lieutenant John George Corry of the 70th (or the Surrey) Regiment of Foot; he appears in the 1837 List, and does not appear in the Hart's the List for August 1839.

As is the case with other officers names that simply disappear from the list, I believe he may have died or been killed in action.

Unfortunately I can't find a casualty list for 1839 however, I believe he may have been attached to EIC forces during the middle months of 1839. The only unsubstantiated information I can find is that a Lieutenant by the name Corry (no Christian names given) died near Shikapoor in June 1839.

If this was the same man, it would explain why he was gone from the list published in August 1839.

There are two other officers by the name of Corry, but I can't place their regiments as being involved in the 1st Afghan War.

Can anyone help with specific details that will confirm whether or not Lieut. J. G. Corry of the 70th Foot, died in 1839?

Hi Martin,

Thanks very much for the information and it certainly appears to be the same person, and certainly identifies the death of J. G. Corry. However, this makes my search for the mystery officer by the name of Corry even more difficult; as I don't have any other candidates at the moment with the name Corry that were serving with one of H.M's regiments in Afghanistan in 1839.

Many thanks.

Hi Martin,

I think I've found my man; Lieutenant Savage Hall Corry, the 17th (or the Leicestershire) Regiment of Foot; Ensign by purchase 19th December 1834; Lieutenant by purchase 29th April 1836.

Now fairly well certain this is the correct person.

Regards,
