Book Suggestions for Sind and Gwalior Campaigns

Postby Mark » 21 Apr 2015 09:24

Dear All

Can anyone suggest good books that cover the Sind and Gwalior campaigns of the 1840s? I am looking for both primary and secondary accounts as well as old or more recently published works.

Thanks in advance.

I am not sure how much interest there is in the Sind campaign, but the following book may appeal to some:

The Conquest of Scinde by Maj.-Gen. W. F. P. Napier

Thanks, Maureen. I have copies of most of these, which appears to be just about all I can find on these two campaigns.

Dear Mark
I come rather late to this discussion but also recommend:

Bruce (W.) LIFE OF GENERAL SIR CHARLES NAPIER GCB . John Murray 1885
Huttenback (R.) BRITISH RELATIONS WITH SIND 1799-1843. OUP edtn 2007
Khera (P.). BRITISH POLICY TOWARDS SINDH UPTO ITS ANNEXATION. Ranjit 1963
Lawrence (R.). SIR CHARLES NAPIER. John Murray 1952.
Scott (A.) ed. SCINDE IN THE FORTIES. Constable 1912.

The Gwalior Campaign is best approached via the commander - Lord Gough. Especially his biography:
Rait (R.). THE LIFE AND CAMPAIGNS OF HUGH 1ST VISCOUNT GOUGH 2vols Constable 1903
The 1st volume of Lord Anglesey`s HISTORY OF BRITISH CAVALRY also has a useful 14 pp on the two campaigns
We have the autobiography of Gough`s cavalry commander - Wylly (Col H.) ed. THE MILITARY MEMOIRS OF
LIEUT-GENERAL SIR JOSEPH THACKWELL. John Murray 1908.
Also Trooper Gould - Gould (W.) "THREE CHEERS FOR THE QUEEN - LANCERS CHARGE !" the Leonaur reprint of
TEN YEARS IN INDIA. Leonaur 2010.
I also recommend Fortescue`s HISTORY OF THE BRITISH ARMY Vol XII. pp 281-300 and 327-343
