Photographs of NWF Forts/Outposts 1890s

Dear All

I am seeking photographs (if they exist) of the following forts/outposts of the North West Frontier of India taken in the 1890s:

Chitral
Gulistan
Lockhart
Saragheri
Shabdakr

Ultimately I would like to use them in a future publication, thus would need to be either copyright free or have permission to use from the copyright holder. They would also need to be high-resolution.

If anyone has such images, or can point me in the right direction to obtaining them, I would be extremely grateful.

Michael Bartop's book The North West Frontier- A Pictoral History 1839-1947 has photographs of Chitral (both external and internal), together with the signal station at Saragarhi, although the latter is after the Sikhs had retaken it, so it's basically a ruin.

The Army in India a photogrphic record 1850-1914 published Hutchinson 1968 in association with the National Army Mseum has a photograph (#33, on p 48) of Chitral taken on the Relief Expedition in 1895. The Notes on the Photographs quotes Accession No. PA/PH 5317 (7) and Negative No. N/PH 6496 in the National Army Museum, so you may be able to obtain permission from them to use it.

Photograph #38 on p 54, taken by the Bombay sappers and Miners, is of the interior of Saraghari Post at the time of the Tirah Expeditionary Force 1897, Accession No. PA 5705/28(1) Negative No. N/PH 6364.

I don't know if they will provide digital copies for reproduction but at least you know what to ask for.

Thanks, Martin! I have actually got this book (I should have had thought about it) so will take a look. Hopefully the author has credited the source.

Fantastic, thank you! The NAM will allow you to use their images for a fee, and with the accession numbers it should be simple to get a quote.

Apparently there are no traces of the Saragheri post today, although forts Gulistan and Lockhart are still standing.
