Rawalpindi-help with service record please

Postby Dannemois » 25 Feb 2015 16:04

Hi I'm not sure if this is the right place for my enquiry but I will give it a go. I am trying to make sense of the service papers of Alfred Ernest Lawes who served with the Royal Artillery 1886-1900. Can someone please see 'History2' attached and help with some of the entries. He enlisted at Newport 20 Feb 86, the next three entries Devonport 88, Newport 89, and Devonport 91 are I presume is where he received his training. I can’t make the next entry – as he landed in India 7 April 94 – could this be the name of a ship? He arrived at Rawalpindi 19 April 94. The next entry looks like Kale Bags ????? Can someone please explain this. Finally I assume the ss Shanghai is the ship he departed India on.

Any help would be appreciated

Kalabagh was a small cantonment in Hazara District, North-West Frontier Province, situated in 34° 6’ N. and 73° 25’ E., on the road between Abbottabad and Murree, in the area known generally as the Murree Hills. During the summer months it was occupied by one of the British mountain batteries which were stationed at Rawalpindi in the winter.

There were a number of similar small cantonments/camps used in the summer in the Murree Hills, see the FIBIS Fibiwiki page Murree

The attachment is not big enough for me to read well, but he seems to have been based only at Rawal Pindi (R Pindi) and Kala Bagh (Kalabagh)
