Alexander Kevan, Thlotso Heights

Postby Mike Morley » 26 Mar 2014 15:11

Hi

I came across a grave in Sheuchan Cemetery, Stranraer, that had a memorial inscription: Alexander Kevan, their son, who was killed in action with Basutus 9th March 1881aged 24 years. Interred at Thlotso Heights, South Africa.

Is this a skirmish from the Transvaal Rebellion? Can anyone fill in some detail, please?

Mike

More likely, I fancy, something to do with the Anglo-Basuto 'Gun War' (about which I know little if anything). Try a google of Gun War and see what you come up with. Might help.

Thanks for the quick reply, Mike. I've found a web page that provides the Roll of Honour for the Gun War and Alex Kevan is not on. It does say, "Many Africans fought for the Cape but there were no Regular British troops other than a handful of Staff Officers." So he may not be a Gun War casualty.

Hello Mike

It looks to be the Gun War; the soldier's name is Alexander Kevan Cumming and I believe it to be the Sgt Cumming, Kimberley Horse, killed Thlotse (sic) 9-3-1880 (sic) in this article.

Meurig,

That's brilliant, thanks ever so much. That's the man. No doubt I'll be back on other threads. I know I've got a chap from the Battle of Inkerman to post.
