Gough

Can anybody tell me where this photograph was taken?

It is in an album of my Grandfather's pictures, but as is the case with most of his pictures, there are no labels. The word on the side of the plinth is Gough. I would guess the date is somewhere around 1885.

Thanks jf42, for the interesting link. That dates the photo to 1891-2 when the Tenth were in Dublin.

This is the only way I can date Grandpa's photographs and it is going to take for ever to work my way through them.

Now, which one is next?

You might guess it was situated in Ireland from reading the last para of jf42's link:

...The statue received much abuse before its demise, losing its head and sword in 1944, a rear leg in 1956, before being finally blown off the pedestal in 1957...

RobD

I suspect that it did pretty well to get as far as 1944 before it lost its head!

So far as I am aware the statue stood in Phoenix Park, Dublin. Its rather sad that nationalists damaged it since Gough was always a very proud Irishman.
