Copying this message in this forum as think I may have put it in the wrong forum yesterday.

Hello
This is my first time on this forum and I wonder if anyone can help me? I have the service record from Kew (WO69) of a possible relative of mine and would like to find out a bit more about him but I'm struggling to work out exactly which regiment he was in, I thought that Royal Artillery, 5th then 9th battalion would be enough but now I'm totally confused 'Highlander'? 'Gunner'? Am I just being dense?
This is the information I have
2108 Alexander Gauld
Enlisted for the Royal Artillery on 21st Dec 1844 at Huntly? aged 19
Gunner and Deiver? 9th battalion for 282 days and then 5th battalion 1st Oct 1845 - 23rd oct 1855 (think it says that total forfited?) He diserted at King Williams Town Cape of Good Hope.
Captain ...Woolsley and ............... colonel signed
He was absent on a number of occasions and imprisoned on a number of occasions from 1847-1852
His overseas service - cape of good hope 22nd Oct 1849-23rd Oct 1855
Born Insch, Aberdeenshire. Occupation - labourer
Any help on where I can find out more about him, including any further information about his service history and battalion would be very much appreciated

Hi there,

The rank or position is gunner and driver.

Some further information might be found from my article on George Chissel Royal Artillery posted on this website.

Good luck

Andre
