Siege of Umtata

For all discussions relating to the Seventh, Eigth and Nineth Cape Frontier Wars fought between 1846 and 1878.

Siege of Umtata

Postby rdarby » 03 Dec 2012 03:02

In the Transkei campaign, for which the Cape of Good Hope General Service Medal with bar Transkei was given, was a siege of the town of Umtata.

There is little I can find on what happened. Does anyone know of any books etc. that have any detail on Umtata?

Thanks for the help

In Allan Mallinson's fictional book "Company of Spears" set around 1827-1828 he says the battle was in August 1828, the hero is involved in an action, which he later identifies as the "Umtata River" but it's obviously a story and if memory serves its against the Zulu so it's probably contrived. Perhaps it's based on it though?

I don't know if you agree or not but both Mallinson's 'company of Spears' and 'Warrior' are exceptional pieces of historical fiction.
