Is anyone aware of Empire Troops wearing typical Cavalier Type Slouch hats prior to the 1880's. Thankyou.

I'm not sure how early the practice of wearing of broad-brimmed hats pinned up on the side began, but contemporary sketches show the Frontier Light Horse wearing slouch hats at the time of the Zulu War. Durnford's Natal Native Horse, too.

Thanks, I did watch the movie with Burt Lancaster wearing one. However as to its authenticity, I cannot be certain if it was reflective of this time. You did mention sketches. Would there be any references to, as such ? Thankyou.

There are good photos in: "Zulu War: Volunteers, Irregulars & Auxiliaries: (Osprey - Men-at-Arms) by Ian Castle ISBN 978-1-84176-484-9"

I attach a pics of FLH and NNC. Not sure if the latter wore "uniforms" or just their own clothes.
Natal Light Horse wore broad brimmed hats in the AZW, like the FLH.

Thankyou,
I looked into a Dutch Military Book while in Amsterdam and found an image. It reads Korporal van het 6de regiment te voet(8 ste Kafferooriog, Zuid Afrika 1850-1853 ). The 8th Kaffir War, I suggest. The soldier wears a Slouth Hat.
