Hello- I'm trying to do some research on the kit and weapons used by the 42nd in the 1874 dust-up in the Gold Coast. There seems to be a dearth of photographs of this campaign, and the engravings in papers like the ILN seem to be a little general in detail. Some questions I have are : Did the 42nd ORs carry the short Snyder rifle or the regular 3 band infantry Snyder? Did they use the P1871 belts and pouches? If not, what did they use? Water bottles: was the round drum type watter bottle still in issue, or was the Oliver pattern used? (I think some sources list a post 1874 issue date for the Oliver pattern?) Are there any photos of the issue flannel or drab uniforms Gen. Woolsley designed? Thanks in advance for any information. Cheers Jim
Hi Jim, Sorry, for some reason I've completely missed this topic till now. Uniforms/equipment isn't my strong suit, but I'm sure I've seen a photo or two somewhere of the 42nd's uniform in this campaign. I'll see what I can dig up.
Photos of ORs are like gold dust Jim and I've not been able to find one, sorry. But in case it helps at all, here's the 42nd's khaki campaign uniform from Ashantee,as modelled by Major Francis Cunningham Scott.
