Regiments Involved in Asantee

Postby pankaye » 13 Feb 2010 00:38

Hi
I am an Ghanaian man currently serving in the British Army. I am interested in researching the history of regiments involved in the Asantee campaigns. There seems to be very little information available as to which regiments were actually involved. So far I know The Black Watch (42nd of Foot), Royal Welch Fusiliers (23rd of Foot) and 2nd West India Regiment plus elements of the Rifle Brigade were were involved in the Segrenti War. Plus it was mostly the Gold Coast Constabulary for the Yaa Asante War. Can anyone please point me in the right direction for me to find which other regiments could have been involved. cheers

pankaye,

Welcome to the Forum! Have you tried consulting British Battles and Medals? It has a fairly complete listing of the British units by campaign. By the Segrenti War, do you mean the Ashanti War of 1873-74? Are you familiar with "Ashanti 1895-96" by Ian McInnes and Mark Fraser? It contains a list of the units involved. Good luck with your search.

All the best,

Hello,

I think you are pretty much there, just add in the various corps and the RN and RM.

You could also search the medals sold by the auctioneers Dix Noonan Webb to tease out the 'odd men' employed outside their regiment.
