Wolsey's special service clothing- Ashanti 1873-4

Postby jf42 » 19 Jul 2016 10:13

Greetings all,

Could any member direct me towards a source or sources that discuss the special service uniform that Wolseley ordered for the Ashanti expedition? The degree to which he was responsible for choice of cut and fabrics, and how the uniforms and helmets were sourced, would be of great interest.

Thank you

I'll look a bit later JF, possibly not today, but my first thought is of Maurice's 2-volume unofficial 'official' history and Winwood Reade's book The Story of the Ashantee Campaign. He was on the ground as a war-correspondent, I think, off the top of my head, for the Times).

Sorry JF stupid me...I don't mean Maurice's unofficial official history...I mean Henry Brackenbury's. ('They're all in it together' as Lord Roberts observed to me at the club the other day)!
