We appeared to have suffered an attack from spammers but this should now be resolved. Thanks for the heads-up!

Mark,

I would like to see a section dedicated to Troubleshooting. That is, an area where members can post problems they are having e.g. how does the List feature work, what does the List= do, how does one spell check a post before submitting it.

I worked out the List but it creates an indented one only and not a bulleted nor numbered one. Spell check works by right clicking and selecting Check Spelling from the popup menu (must have IESpell installed).

But you get my drift.

Thanks,

Stuart

Mark,

is it possible to put a post number e.g. #21 within each post? This would enable us to easily refer to a particular post within the topic.

Might I suggest a section for Events, either re-enactment or special open days etc that members can post up.

This could be helpful to enable people to plan visits and see what is happening around the country/world.

Are there any calendar widgets/plug-ins for phpBB? If so, that might be a way to help us avoid creating another sub-forum and to deliver an easy to read and use resource for Victorian military events.

Hello everybody. Stuart Bates idea of having an "ID" to identify the post one is responsding to is a great idea and would eliminate the 'quoting' which is extra work and sometimes takes up a great deal of space on a topic. That form of posting is very old style. The best way of seeing a most excellent example of what I am proposing and what I believe Stuart is proposing is looking at what Amazon U.S and U.K. does in their forums.
Here is how to see what they have done.
1-Go to Amazon and put 'music' into the search box
2-Put 'Beatles' into the box to the right of the box with 'music' in it. (OK Mark, put your favorite band the 'Sex Pistols' instead)
3-Click go
4-Put your curser on any of the listed albums and left click
5-The album you selected will show and now SCROOL DOWN to nearly the bottom of the page.
6-There should be a list of forums...find 'music' and click.
7-Click on any topic and you will be there

You can post replys just like in this forum but there is a extra thing that can be done. You can post to a specific post. Click "Reply to this post" and you now have your own personal box to reply with the post you are replying to just above yours for comparison. When you post your reply, you do see your post as the last post in order just like this forum, but a 'tag' has been placed that states "In reply to an earlier post on Oct. 23...etc".
When any person on the site clicks on "In reply to an earlier post", the post replied to pops up in a small scroll box. So now others can see who and what you are replying to. Try it. Put your curser on any "In reply to an earlier post" and check it out. When I first came to this Victorian wars Forum, I was so dissapointed that the Amazon system was not in use. With the Amazon system, you can make a general post OR a post specific.

Very fast and efficient. In this forum, I don't quote because I word my post so that everybody hopefully knows to who's post I am referring to. Who really reads the quotes anyway. We have already read the initial post! With the Amazon system you have the option of bringing up the replied post or not.

Hi
One function I think would be very valuable is the ability to magnify an image within the Forum.

I will show an example from the FIBIS Fibiwiki. Although this is not the same format as this Forum, there is the similarity that once you have registered, anyone can download images and write text.

The FIBIS Fibiwiki page "35th Regiment of Foot" has two (small) images, (the small size determined by being in a gallery. If there had been a single image, the underlying text determines the size.)
http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=3 ... nt_of_Foot

If you click on the first image, you go to a larger image
http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=F ... x_Regt.jpg

If you click on this 2nd image, you go to a larger image again, but then there is no further choice of size.
http://wiki.fibis.org/images/2/27/Royal_Sussex_Regt.jpg

An image whose link I posted on another thread on this Forum recently is
http://imgzoom.cdlib.org/Fullscreen.ics ... calisphere. Here you can increase the image to the size you require.

I have no technical knowledge, so do not know if the scan of the original file has a bearing, or whether the restraints of this Forum would prevent magnification .

Cheers
Maureen

Hi Maureen

We already have a similar function to that installed on the forum. If you post an image which is bigger than the 700x700 pixel limit the image will be sized down to fit within it. However, upon clicking the image it expands to its original size. Images that will expand have a small discreet magnifying glass in one of its top corners.

Mark :)
