Gate Pa 150th Commemorations - Gun Salute Day

Postby Rural53 » 27 Apr 2014 07:40

Here in Tauranga we are in the run up to the 150 year commemoration of the Battle of Gate Pa, where the Maori beat the British Army. One of the events was the Gun Salute Day. The Armed Constabulary Artillery reinactors had their 6lb Armstrong guns and 12lb Coehorn mortars there. The 43rd and 65th Regiment reinactors were there as well.

They gave out raffle tickets to the public to win a chance to fire the guns or mortars.

A couple of my favourite photos from the day.

I also got to fondle the Calisher and Terry Carbine, at the bottom, that colsjt65 is trying to sell me. I really want it but can't justify the price tag.

Very interesting, thanks for posting. Are the Armstrong guns & mortars original pieces or modern reconstructions?

Great stuff!
The Maori scored a few good points against the British.

The Armstrongs and mortars are all repros built in the 1980s by the men in the photos.

Smashing !!! So good to see a crowd of interested spectators.

Really nice to see the little fellows getting to work the lanyard !

Looked like a fine sunny day.

Cheers, Johnnie, 93rd Highlanders 1854-57.
