Canada Customs Code

Postby Gunner.BMF » 02 Feb 2015 00:57

I don't know if this has come up before so here goes. If you live in Canada and purchase items from other countries ask the shipper to write in the Customs Declaration Form or Label the following,

ANOX 9040 FOR HISTORICAL REENACTMENT

The item will be tax and duty free. I have used this code to purchase everything from tents to antique firearms.

But they still hit you for HST, eh?

Gary,

I didn't have to pay any tax.

Kevin,

I am truly surprised! I have had to pay HST on duty free antiques, etc. Must try this code the next time!

In my experience, if there is no duty payable (e.g. under the North American Free Trade Agreement) then they will often let stuff through without charging anything. I speculate that they figure collecting just a few dollars in GST (no HST in Alberta  ) isn't worth the time and effort. Seems to be "hit or miss" however ....
