Hi all, Wondering if anyone can help me?

Postby bertbuckie » 10 Jun 2016 13:06

Hi all, First off I know nothing about old bayonets but I was down the local skip dumping rubbish today and saw these 2 things and picked them up.
One appears to be a 1st world war lee metford 1888 enfield maker mk1 version 2 but no idea about the other, or where I could get a few £ for them ( saving for a house ) legally.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, or even where to post in the forum would help as I am clueless I am afraid.

Bert :)

Nothing like free bayonets! The 1888p is regimentally marked 1 BR. Possibly 1st B? Rifles. Need to look it up.

The other bayonet is a Fench 1874 Gras , a very common pattern.

Thanks Will,

Are they worth anything? And where could I flog them where they wont end up in kids hands etc. I only picked them up because they looked like something I once saw on an antiques program tbh :)

You can put these in the for sale section of this forum. I would google them for price, taking into account condition of the bayonets.

I did a google and got various prices ( think the french ones worthless more or less as its in extremely poor condition )
The other is harder to price, been offered £30 from a colleague for it, but see them at £60-£600, bearing in mine mine has no frog, and isnt the first 3 rivet version I would think closer to the £60-£100 ?
Might just sell them to my mate just to get rid easily.

I think selling to your mate is your best bet.

Hi Rob,

The pattern 1888 looks to have been manufactured by Enfield but I could not see the year of manufacture due to the many re-issue stamps.

The regimental stamp 1BR may be The Border Regiment 1st or second regiment [ 34th or 54th foot, pre 1881].

The good side is the scabbard looks in good condition and should clean up well, this is an item which is usually missing.

A great find at the tip!!!

Malcolm.
Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition!
