query re HMS Lord Warden

Postby Paul crook » 23 Feb 2017 10:04

I am researching a royal marine relative and have obtained his service record for 1875 to 1884. The only problem is that I can't read all of it clearly. I think he was on HMS Lord Warden in 1881 until 1883, but I'm not sure. Does any one know if Lord Warden was the only Lord in the fleet at that time and who the commanding officer was. If it helps at all the Royal Marine in question was a William Holland.
Thanks

I can't answer your question regarding the Captain, but if you can get access to the Navy Lists' for the periods in question this should list all the officers.

Lord Warden's sister ship the Lord Clyde is the only other 'Lord' in the navy. At the time your man was on her she was the Guard ship on the Forth, and would have acted as a training vessel for men serving at land based coastguard stations, as well as having a small standing crew.
