Capt Morant RN

There is a picture on E Bay of a RN officer available for sale. I am not sure how to transfer the link or the picture to this forum. It is allegedly of Capt Morant c 1860. The officer has one ring which I think is not a captains insignia of the period. Capt Morant, I assume, is the man who later became Admiral George Digby Morant and by 1860 had been awarded an Indian gsm, clasp Pegu, two Crimean medals and a China medal plus a Turkish order. Did the RN wear medal ribbons on their uniform in this period? The notorious Breaker Morant claimed that Adml Morant was his father, which is nonsense, but the photo is interesting. Can anyone help with the rank and any other information.

This cdv is of a Lieutenant. The regulations required Lieutenants to have a single 1/2" wide lace stripe with a 2" diameter executive curl when in the military branch of the service. Lieutenants were not entitled to wear two stripes until 1863.

Thank you Martin and that means the dating of the picture is roughly correct. Morant (if it the man who became the admiral) was indeed a Lt at the time. Anyone know if the RN wore medal ribbons at that time.

Joe

I'm fortunate in having two photographs of an officer whose medals are in my collection, these were taken sometime between 1862 and 1869, when he died of typhoid. On these he is wearing medal ribbons, but since there was not yet a formal system for wearing them, they are arranged vertically on his left breast, with a gap between each one.
