Cities and Counties without regiments.

Were there any major cities, regiments or counties in the United Kingdom that did not have regiments after the Childer Reforms? Also what was the highest number given to a regiment pre the reforms?

There is logic as ever to my odd questions :-).

Kind regards

If you have a mooch around this site, you will find be able to ascertain the answers to both those questions. You may have to persevere with some of the links by clicking along the wayback timeline when shown. I thnk you'll find quite a few cities did not have regiments associated with them as such, even though a county regiment might have its depot within a given county town or city. ... .htm#table

Several counties lost their regiments as a result of the Cardwell Reforms, including Monmouthshire, Herefordshire, Hertfordshire, Rutlandshire, Buckinghamshire and Huntingdonshire. Others, such as Cambridgeshire, never had a regiment. All of these counties were later (after 1908) given Territorial Force regiments with the county name and Buckinghamshire was reinstated by linking with Oxfordshire and Hertfordshire later became linked with Bedfordshire.

The highest number of foot raised was the 135th, with almost all those after 103rd being associated with Scotland and / or Ireland.

There were several cities that did not have any particular regiment associated with them.
Relic of many a fight and siege and sack, it points a moral and adorns the back.
