Can anybody please explain the difference between pivotal and non-pivotal drill?
Colonel Valentine Baker introduced a new system of non-pivotal drill into the Tenth Hussars in 1865 I think, as a first in the Army. A few regiments adopted it as an improvement but it was scrapped soon afterwards before being re-introduced generally later. He saw it in operation whilst studying cavalry in Austria.
I would like to know what made it better, how it worked, what was the old system like and why, if it was superior, was it poo-pooped in the first place, and took so long to be recognised as being simpler.
