This from 'I'm 95', monthly regimental publication of the Derbyshire Regiment dated February 1889:
"NOTES FROM THE DERBY DEPOT January 1st '89. Dear Sir, since last I wrote we have another Football victory to chronicle - on the 15th December we played the 2/Worcester Regiment in the second round for the Army Cup and won by 8 goals to love - our team was as follows - Goal Qr.Mr.Sergt. Cupit - Backs Dr. Roberts and Pte. Bacon. Half Backs, Dr.Dorks and Dr. Turner and Pte.Vail. Right Wing Dr.Griffiths, Pte.Sheldon. Centre Pte. Whitcomb. Left Wing Sergt. Hoare, Pte. Vailey. Referee Capt. Sim R.E. Umpires Revd. Gurynne and Lieut. Stipney, N.Stafford Regiment. We have not yet heard whom we are to play against in the 3rd Round. I am Sir, Yours truly. G."

My great grandfather was "Centre Pte. Whitcomb". I wonder who the Derbyshire Regiment Depot did play in the 3rd Round of the Army Cup 1889 - and are there any further reports on their progress.........
