Soldiers swimming test: Hong Kong 1907

Postby Maureene » 06 Nov 2013 12:27

I came across this link which shows soldiers at a Company swimming test 1907 in Hong Kong. I thought it was interesting as it showed the type of swimming costumes worn, and also that it was a Company swimming test!

It was decided it was e a group of swimmers from 'A' Coy, 3rd Middlesex Regiment

Nice image, Maureen - worth remembering that the ability to swim was not something that could be taken for granted during much of the Victorian period, so perhaps military swimming contests like this were partly an attempt to improve mortality rates from death by drowning? As well as being great fun for the participants too, of course (must keep the lads busy with sports and games or who knows what mischief they'd get up to!).
