Meal time in the mess

Postby HerbertKitch12 » 07 Jul 2015 22:09

Does anyone have an idea what the officers would have eaten in the mess in England in the latter Victorian era. Always had a picture of evenings in the mess being a mixture of good food, wine and choice cigars and brandy. Don't know if I have built this picture from reading Harry Flashman though :-).

Any help appreciated.

Herbert:

I would assume that the food served in the officer's mess would be similar to that served in gentry/upper middle class homes and the homes of the wealthy, since these were the classes the officers were mainly drawn from. It may also be safe to say that the quality and types of food may vary from regiment to regiment. For example, food served in the mess of the Guards, Kings Royal Rifle Corps, Rifle Brigade and Cavalry regiments may have been a bit different from that served in say, the Buffs or other Line Infantry regiments.
