A Very Scarce Indian Mutiny Medal to a Irish "Soldier Bishop"
Born in 1830 Lieutenant Anthony Butler first bought his commission in 1850 with the 87th Regiment of Foot (Royal Irish Fusiliers) where he was connected to many Irish familes of note, was promoted to Captain in 1860 then adjutant of the regiment, He served in the Indian Mutiny where 87th Regiment medals were issued as no clasp medals. He returned to the regiment as a chaplain in the west indies. Very unique to this regiment?
After the war he retired in 1866 and joined the Jesuits and was ordained in 1872, in 1876 the Pope made him Bishop of Demerara and upon his death he was buried with full military honours.
A very interesting medal with more scope for research, perfect for Irish collectors and more! very scarce to a Soldier bishop.
