Here is a list of regimental historical records available for reading online (and download in pdf. format for some). Dates of publishing range from the early 1840s to the early 20th C., but I have included only those that have at least one campaign into the reign of Victoria. I have added the principal campaigns into which the regiments were involved (though I might have overseen some of them, for this I apologize)
The list does not cover all the regiments in the British Army, those books are all I could find to date.
I hope this would be of interest to the members of the VWF.

If anyone hasn't discovered Google books yet, it is well worth having a look at. Some bits are frustrating as they only provide snippets from books that are still in copyright or have other restructions. But it has a good search facility and some books are fully available to download. Try searching for a specific topic - such as "Afgahnistan" or "Crimea" and it comes up with all sorts!

Hi

The FIBIS Fibiwiki has links to many online books. The link to the Fibiwiki Main Page is http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=Main_Page , or it may be accessed from the main FIBIS website http://www.new.fibis.org

FIBIS is Families in British India Society, and the Fibiwiki is like Wikipedia, but with the emphasis on India. There is a search facility similar to Wikipedia.

The addition of links to online books is an ongoing project. The following pages may be helpful:
“Military periodicals online” for general information. http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=M ... als_online

“Chronological list of Wars and Campaigns” http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=C ... _Campaigns. Select the war you are interested in and there will be links to online books

“Category: Regiments” http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=C ... :Regiments Select the type of Regiment, and then the specific regiment and there will be links to online books.

“British Army” http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=British_Army. Links to all kinds of information including online books

Re: Victorian Military Books for eReaders

Postby Andre Chissel » 28 May 2012 02:56

Hi there,

Two books I have been using in my research which are available online are:

“From Quebec to Pretoria” by Sergeant W.F.R. Hart-McHarg amd "Ian Hamilotn's March" by Winston Churchill - both have been truly magnificent for the very esoteric aspect of the Boer War which I have been researching.

Online editions of Hart's Annual Army List, Special Reserve List, and Territorial Force List from the early 1900s to 1913 have recently been uploaded by the National Library of Scotland to Archive.org

They have now been added to the FIBIS Fibiwiki page “Military periodicals online”, section “New Annual Army List” where all the available online volumes from 1858 may be seen, with information where to find earlier or other editions.
http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=M ... _Army_List

The Archive.org link is http://archive.org/search.php?query=col ... publicdate

There are also editions of the New Army List, which was a more frequent publication, on the Fibiwiki page to December 1919

I have the history but it only goes up to 1897. There are only two pages for the period 1894-97 which I will gladly photocopy for you if you send me your address. Trooper
