Forthcoming Book | Pathan Rising by Mark Simner

Dear All

I thought you might like to know that work on my forthcoming book, Pathan Rising: Jihad on the North West Frontier of India 1897-98, is complete and will be published by Fonthill Media in the (hopefully) not too distant future. As the title suggests, the book examines the large-scale risings of numerous Pathan tribes against the British in 1897. As and when I have more details regarding its likely publication date I will post further details.

In the meantime, I have begun work on another title, which will focus on another late-Victorian campaign. Again, more details on that later.

Thanks all! Publication date is set to 21 July 2016 in UK, not sure about US yet but will let you know.

I received the front cover design today, which looks superb! Hopefully this will begin to filter through shortly on bookshop web sites.

At present it is listed on Amazon as coming soon but no option to pre-order. However, both Waterstones and Foyles appear to be taking pre-orders already.

The book is hardback with 272 pages. I have included around 10 maps and 60+ images also. RRP is £25.00

Glad you like it. Brigadier-General Sir Bindon Blood is seated in the centre with some of his staff and other officers who fought at the siege of Malakand. The original B/W photograph is from my personal collection, the graphics team at my publishers giving it a little colour.

Please be aware that Pathan Rising has been delayed slightly. Although the intended UK publication date was 21 July 2016, it is now likely to be out in late August. This is due to the workload of my publisher and not because of any problems etc. As a consequence, the US release date is now January 2017.

In the meantime, it is still available for pre-order from the usual bookshops.

I will update you as I know more.

Hi Mark

A non Victorian query. The title uses "Pathan" which as far as I am aware was the only spelling for this tribal group until relatively recently. It certainly was still used by English language newspapers in Pakistan during sixties. Pathans spoke "Pushtu" though Caroe mentions hard and soft variants)

When did ""Pashtun" become the accepted transcription - I assume like Bombay/Mumbai, it is a more accurate rendition of the pronunciation.

Did the new spelling cause you a dilemma for the book? (Which, as a collector with a few IGS 95s I look forward to greatly)

The term 'Pathan' was used by the British throughout their time in India, and those in India who I have spoken to still seem to use Pathan rather than Pashtun. The various tribes, I believe, refer to themselves as Pashtuns rather than Pathans, but I am not entirely sure when this became the norm for us today.

As to the adoption of spellings, I opted for that in use at the time rather than that used today - hence the book title. I believe this makes life easier for those who go on to find out more, since the available period and primary sources of course use the older form of spellings - as do period maps. And of course, even period spellings can vary! I have followed the same rule for my book on Kitchener's re-conquest of Sudan.

It was quite a challenge writing the book, as there is not the volume of sources you find with other Victorian conflicts. All that said, I do believe I have managed to produce by far the most detailed account of the rising ever written. Its a fascinating but sadly understudied campaign in our period of interest.
