Pathan Rising: Jihad on the North West Frontier of India 1897-1898
Pathan Rising: Jihad on the North West Frontier of India 1897-1898 tells the story of the large‐scale tribal unrest that erupted along the North West Frontier of India in the late 1890s; a short but sharp period of violence that was initiated by the Pathan tribesmen against the British.

Although the exact causes of the unrest remain unclear, it was likely the result of tribal resentment towards the establishment of the Durand Line and British ‘forward policy’, during the last echoes of the ‘Great Game’, that led the proud tribesmen to take up arms on an unprecedented scale. This resentment was brought to boiling point by a number of fanatical religious leaders, such as the Mad Fakir and the Hadda Mullah, who visited the various Pathan tribes calling for jihad.

By the time the risings ended, eleven Victoria Crosses would be awarded to British troops, which hint at the ferocity and level of bitterness of the fighting. Indeed, although not eligible for the Victoria Cross in 1897, many Indian soldiers would also receive high‐level decorations in recognition of their bravery.

It would be one of the greatest challenges to British authority in Asia during the Victorian era.

My book is also now available in eBook format, both in UK and USA.

Publication date of the hardback edition in USA is still set as January 2017, so not long to wait.

It is, however, available now in bookshops in the UK.

Do your royalties remain the same if I buy US edition from Amazon US - this would be considerably cheaper for me in Australia if I pre order. however I'll order from U.K. If you're missing out

Hi Jon

Royalties are calculated as a percentage of sales, but please go for the cheaper option for yourself.

I won't be getting rich on book sales, but I will plough any money gained back into this forum.

Thoroughly enjoying it so far Mark. Well done.

(Shame about the reference (page 18) to the Punjab Irregular Force being composed of Sikhs with British Officers - who were later known as the Corps of Guides. As I'm sure you will now know, the Guides were just one of the regiments in the Punjab Irregular Force and recruited many races other than Sikhs.)

I find it easy to follow and it is a great guide to the events of the time. Many thanks.

Ah crikey! I should have explained that one better - my apologies.

Glad you like the book overall though :)

For those of you who read Military History Monthly (UK) magazine, there is a nice piece about my latest book written by author and historian Jules Stewart in the February 2017 issue.
