Markings to London Navy Colt

Hi I have a London Navy Colt with the following letters engraved by the trigger guard L,M,S,D . I would very much like to know what they stand for? Maybe, London Military Stores Department/ Depot ? It is stamped with W^D

David

I don't think there was such an establishment as the 'London Military Stores Dept'. Many of the broad arrow Colts went into long-term storage at the Tower following the Crimean War, so I can't imagine they would have been engraved as such. The serial number falls within the range normally associated with Govt issue, so it clearly is part of that original batch.

Have you considered that this might be an identifying mark engraved by the owner, his initials possibly? Did it come with any provenance?

Tony.
