Infantry drill 1896

I was hoping someone might have a copy of the above book, and might be able to tell me if it had any information on Defensive Tactics of the time, or whether it was just 'drill' in the modern off-the field sense.

I'm thinking about doing a military history degree and would very much like to compare what was in this book with later field regulations.

Hi there. There are a few articles (117-121) under "Pt V, Combined Tactics" and there is another article (128) entitled "Infantry in Defence".

All in, about 9 pages in the above references vs about 30 that are "Offensive" in nature.

Not so much "tactics" as principles and tenants...

"selection of a [defensive] position", "Requirements of a Defensive Position", and so on...

Haven't read into it completely, but as a cursory examination....
Cheers,

Thanks Rob, based what you say I've ordered a copy to have a look at, its sounds really interesting. I don't suppose you or anyone else has a copy of the earlier 93 or 89 edition and would be willing to put up a screenshot of a page for me to compare it with the 96 version? Big ask I know....

I have the 89 with the 92/93 on the way. Which page?

Where did you find the 96?
Cheers,
