About (changes to) the way VWF content is organised

I have added a new section under the "Other" forum board called "Re-enacting". If you are a member of an re-enactment group and would like to publish any information about your group or a list of dates of events etc. please feel free to use this section.

New Ashantee Wars Section

Postby Mark » 06 May 2008 22:40

Due to amoaful73's wonderful thread on the Ashantee Wars I have decided these campaigns should have their own section under the "Wars & Campaigns" forum rather than being relegated to the "Other Campaigns" topic. The existing thread has been moved to this new section.

New Soldier/Sailor Research Section

Postby Mark » 14 May 2008 23:57

Hi all

Our member and Moderator Jonathan suggested the setting up of a new section to assist members who are trying to research individual Victorian soldiers and sailors. Many of us are collectors while others are military or family historians. However, one thing we often have in common is the desire to find out about someone who served in the British armed forces during Queen Victoria's reign.

If you are trying to research an individual why not post your questions in this new section (see link below)? There might be other members who can help you!

Mark,

Have you set up the access permissions correctly in this section?

When I try to access the section, it tells me 'You do not have the required permissions to read topics within this forum.'

First & Second Afghan War Sections

Postby Mark » 25 May 2008 15:24

Please note I have merged the First and Second Afghan Wars sub-forums into one. This is in keeping with the others - i.e. First and Second Boer Wars or First, Second and Third China Wars etc.

Since the First Afgan War was fought early in Victoria's reign you will find the newly merged sub-forums are now towards the top of the Wars and Campaigns section.

New Immediate Post-Victorian Section

Postby Mark » 04 Jun 2008 18:09

Hello all

If you haven't already noticed we have decided to set up a new section to cover the campaigns fought by Britain and her Empire between the end of the Boer War and the outbreak of the First World War. This period is often considered by many as an extension to the Victorian era due to the fact there was little change in either Britain or in the Empire for a decade or so after Queen Victoria's death. Indeed the campaigns were of a similar nature and it was not until 1914 and the outbreak of the First World War that the situation altered dramatically. In view of this, and the need to bridge-the-gap between the end of the Boer War and the start of the First World War, this new section has been created.

Please DO NOT post anything from 1914 and the outbreak of the First World War onwards as this is completely outside the scope of the Victorian Wars Forum. If you do wish to discuss issues relating to the First World War you may want to consider posting your question on the Great War Forum or other appropriate forums on the Internet. Any such posts here will be deleted without warning by forum staff!

Alterations to Forum Structure

Postby Mark » 21 Dec 2008 22:48

Hello all

Following the two recent polls regarding the sub-forums relating to the campaigns in South Africa please note that the proposed alterations have now been implemented.

However I would be grateful if forum members could add any suggestions they might have regarding other sub-forums dealing with the various wars and campaigns. Do you think there should be other alterations and if so why? Do you think it is fine as it is?

Again this is your chance to have a say in how the forum is structured - it is your forum as much as mine so please do let me know what you think.

We cannot please everyone but hopefully we can fine-tune the forum into somehting acceptable to the majority.

NEW SECTION: The North West Frontier of India 1837-1901

Postby Mark » 25 May 2009 11:40

Hi All

After much debate and consideration it has been decided to set up a new sub-forum within the Wars and Campaigns section called "The North West Frontier of India, 1837-1901".

The North West Frontier saw many actions during the reign of Queen Victoria so we thought it important to include a section here on the VWF.

Changes to the Forum

Postby Mark » 29 May 2009 22:20

Hi All

A number of minor changes have been made to the forum as follows:

1) The dates at the top under the site title have been changed from "1837 - 1913" to "1837 - 1902". This has been done in order to reflect the main focus of the forum - i.e. the Victorian period. The end date of 1902 (rather than 1901 when the Queen died) was chosen since this was the year the Boer War ended.

*Please note we are still covering the minor campaigns and actions that took place from the end of the Boer War up until the outbreak of the First World War in the "Other Campaigns" section - see 3 below. However the scope of this forum is really the Victorian period!

2) Originally we included the Sixth Cape Frontier War in the Wars and Campaigns section. However this campaign was fought before Queen Victoria was on the throne and since there have been no discussions based on this campaign it has now been removed. The Cape Frontier Wars sub-forum now begins with the Seventh War and as a result there has been a slight reordering of the sub-forums due to the date change.

3) We have amalgamated the "Other Victorian Campaigns" and "Immediate Post-Victorian Campaigns" sub-forums.

These have now been replaced by a single sub-forum called "Other Campaigns". All threads and posts from the previous sub-forums have been moved to the new one. I am sure you will agree it makes sense to use just the one sub-forum for this purpose.

Minor tweaks to forum structure

Postby Mark » 01 Jun 2011 11:10

FAO: All Forum Members

Please be warned there will be a few minor tweaks to the forum structure over the next few days while we test out a few ideas.

There is no need to be alarmed as nothing is being deleted - rather just a bit of moving around and streamlining.

Once the changes are made and we are happy with them we will post a list of the changes.

New Sub-Forum for 1901-1914!

Postby Mark » 29 Nov 2012 18:56

FAO All Forum Members

Due to popular demand we have setup a new sub-forum to cover the Edwardian & Immediate Pre-First World War Period, 1901-1914. Much of this period was little if no different to that of the late Victorian era and since nothing else on the internet forum wise covers these few years it makes sense to include them here. Please keep all topics relating to 1901-1914 in this new sub-forum and if you wish to discuss matters relating to the First World War remember to visit the Great War Forum.

Above all enjoy this seldom discussed yet interesting period!
