Victorian wars related Christmas?

Postby Mark » 02 Dec 2015 16:28

With Christmas looming, I was wondering if any members were planning anything Victorian wars related over the festive season?

I might make a start on my rifle volunteer officers tunic, if I can find the time!

My wargames club is doing the Battle of Dorking as it's Christmas game - my brave Middx home service chaps will be taking on the Hun (with a few rifle volunteers just for you Dixie)- atb Tim

Ha! Thanks Tim - I'm sure they'll give a jolly good account of themselves!

Perhaps this is as good a thread as any in which to post my usual Victorian Military-related Christmas greetings ....

I am being asked by family for book suggestions as gifts for myself. Can anyone suggest any 'new' titles relating to our period of interest?

The R.U.S.I. Journals can make for some interesting reading and Victorian insight.

So did anyone get anything Victorian Wars related for Christmas?

I was fortunate to receive several books on the Anglo-Chinese Wars and the Boxer Rebellion; should make interesting reading in the New Year.

All I received was a lump of coal ... arguably Victorian, but could be Edwardian or later I suppose....

Ended up with a haul - some McIntyre "Gentleman in kharki" pottery, a Boer War loving cup, couple of Boer War handkerchieves, Victorian fob for one of my watch chains - some fine additions to the collection - if ever you need Boer War bits Mark let me know! Atb = Tim

This year I was given the gift of Snook. My wife got me "Go strong into the Desert" & "How could man die better" both by Lt.Col. Mike Snook. I've started "Go Strong..." and it's just too notch stuff. Hugely impressed with it.

In addition, she also got me a Prince August set of moulds for making a 1/32 scale Guards Colour Party. So on the whole I consider myself to have done very well.
