Medal Roll Checks

Postby Mark » 16 Jun 2008 18:34

I have been contacted by a forum member who thought it might be a good idea to publish here details of any Victorian medal rolls that other members may have. The idea is that should any of us acquire or be thinking of acquiring a medal and would like it and/or its clasps confirmed to the appropriate roll we can ask the question here. Similarly you may just be researching a soldier or sailor and would like to know his medal entitlement for a particular campaign. Obviously this is totally voluntary and runs soley on the kindness of members to help each other out. However if you do wish to participate please post details below of which rolls you have should members require assistance. If you see a roll you are interested in either PM the member concerned or post details below.

British South Africa Co Medal - all units

Also the following RN & RM rolls:
NGS for Syria 1840 - (the only part of the roll that's Victorian of course)
Baltic Medal roll - (by ship)

I don't think an Afghan War medal roll exists for the Indian regiments (unless as yet undiscovered in an Indian archive somewhere - which is quite possible... fingers crossed!)

I understand that there is a medal roll for Indian regiments and units for the 2nd Afghan war lounging around in the India Office in London. However, many have tried to locate it but failed...maybe we should get Indiana Jones to prise it out as he is used to dusty archives!!

Maybe one day it will surface...I for one live in hopes.
They should have died in their own loved land.
With friends and kinsmen near them.
Not withered thus on a foreign strand,
With no thought, save heaven to cheer them.

Are you sure that's not just officers? I hope I'm wrong - I'd love to get my hands on that and... shiver... publish it...

I mainly posted the above comment because the Afghan medal roll that's commonly available (copyright and work of YesterYears Genealogy Supplies) does not have "all regiments", just British ones.

I am not quite sure Garen...it is one of the "projects" I was looking at before I got involved writing the book.

I will have to take up the cudgel once again...seem to have a little time on my hands at the moment. If I get anywhere with my enquiries I will let you know...

You are quite correct about the other roll for British Regiments - got that one already.
