1st Bn BW in Edinburgh, they made two visits there in 1881 & 1902/3 which one is this?

Going by the Lee Metford rifles and bayonets as key identifiers, but also the general appearance of the men, their uniforms and the style of photograph, we can with confidence identify the date as 1902/03.
Relic of many a fight and siege and sack, it points a moral and adorns the back.

A further clue pinpointing the date to 1902-03 is the brass cantle on the sporrans worn by the Sergeants in the photo, one in the foreground and one in the background. Black Watch sergeants (other than 1st class staff sergeants) only started wearing metal cantles after 1900.
