Help with Photo

Postby JasonUbych » 23 Aug 2017 17:48

Hi all,
Wonder if anyone can help me out with this photograph.
The family tell me it is CSM William Joseph Hughes, b.1851 circa, they were informed he was in lowlands regiment possibly the Cameronian's. I was going to help them see if there were any records of his service and I am having a little trouble finding him.

Can anyone confirm or not the regiment from the uniform? Any other info would be very welcome.

Thanks in advance for any help.

He is a Troop Sergeant Major (TSM) of 8th King's Royal Irish Hussars. The badge of rank is 4-chevrons with regimental arm badge of a crowned Irish harp above and then a separate crown above that. I would date the photo 1880-1885. The regimental sergeant major had a very similar rank badge in hussar regiments, but superior lace on his dolman and olivettes to fasten the front instead of ball buttons.

The medal roll for the Afghanistan War 1878-1880 has a TSM William Hughes, Regt. No. 926, serving with the 8th Hussars; the other medal looks to be the Long Service Good Conduct Medal.

Martin

Having now checked the LSGC roll I can confirm that TSM Hughes was recommended for the medal by OCR on 1 Oct 1883. (WO 102/7/2)

Brilliant stuff, Martin, cracked it in your usual style.

Wow,

Thanks both of you. My amateur search turned up nothing.
I will pass this info on to the family, once I find a little more of what the regiment were up to, they will be delighted.

Cheers
