Anyone with knowledge of bicorn hats?

Postby Frankjersey » 18 Jul 2017 21:03

Hopefully someone can tell me if this hat is a repro or of the post 1902 era as it's labeled a British antique but looks awfully new. Thanks in advance.

This is another hat it's labeled an American Spanish American war naval hat but the button looks English.

What a shame that the button on the lace is missing as that would have been possibly a definitive pointer.

However, whilst I do not have much in the way of Royal Naval information it is my understanding that the button always had an anchor on it. Their lace most often contained twisted gold bullion. But I stand to be corrected on these observations.

A closeup of the lace may give us a real clue. However, I am suspicious of the interior as having two cocked hats of the Victorian era their interior is markedly different. See below -

Forgot to ask but how many tassels are there, and are there any which are not gold beneath?

Frank,

the style of the cocked hat that you show is of the style worn on "Court" occasions if British. I make the monogram on the button to be "RA" what do you think it is? Certainly it has the King's Crown.

Regards,
