Yes, I recall that we have discussed it before, I think in the GWF. I vaguely recollect that ranks below WO were later allowed to wear a mourning band in set circumstances, although I think that was sometime after the turn of the century.

A morbid question...In the Volunteers, what threshold of national, local or familial "celebrity" warranted armbands for all officers, which warranted armbands on only one or two officers in larger groups? Rob.
KR 1898 "when in mourning or attending funerals" and the implication is that it was a personal matter. KR 1912 drops "funerals". Nevertheless, I am reasonably sure that mass mourning would be ordered on occasion.
