Bob, he's a soldier of Princess Louise's Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders (91st & 93rd)- to give them their full name. Princess Louise, whose husband was the Duke of Argyll, is said to have had a hand in the design of the new Regiment's badges when the 91st and 93rd were united in 1881. The rustic prop-chair raises interesting questions as to where the studio might have been.
Given that the 2nd Battalion were in India from 1891 to 1907, this man is likely to be 1st Battalion. Stations for the 1st Battalion between South Africa and the outbreak of the Great War were:
