Full Dress Blue Universal Helmet Badges

Postby Frogsmile » 10 Jan 2017 14:40

I thought that it might be useful and of interest to the forum if I post photos of full dress head dress badges in regimental sequence. I will start with images of the officers' pattern head-dress itself.

There are of course differences between the pre and post 1902 badges, mainly to do with the crown, but also such arcane additions as words like 'THE' and 'REGIMENT' as well as subtle changes to the design of the central 'device' (motif) and the addition of appellations like 'QUEEN'S', 'KING'S', etc. There were also some regimental foibles where dress regulations were not always followed to the letter and another badge worn instead.

To preserve and emphasise the visual impact I shall show only one badge for each regiment and choose them according to the quality of the photograph and amend as time goes on and other images become available. I have used Dress Regulations for 1891 and 1900, together with Kipling and King's book as a guide.

Royal Northumberland Fusiliers (5th of Foot). Fur cap grenade.

Four and a half inch cut feather plume on left side, top half red, bottom half white (commemorative of an action at Wilhelmstahl when similar plumes were reputedly taken from a defeated enemy unit).

The Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment) (7th of Foot). Fur cap grenade.

Six and a half inch plume of white cut feathers on right side from 1904, as with all original (pre 1827) fusiliers to mark their dress 'as' grenadiers.

Regular fusilier regiments did not of course wear the blue helmet, but several of their volunteer battalions and Territorial Force, did.
