Was there a unit called the 25th Light Dragoons and did they fight in the Boer War?

Fred,

According to British Battles & Medals, the 25th Light Dragoons served during the Napoleonic Wars and were disbanded in 1818.

All the best,

Thanks Gary. I guess the 25 LD on the tang of my CLLE rifle must be refering to the 25th London Regiment then. Thankyou. Fred

So why 25 LD then, rather than 25 LR?
25 London Regt didn't exist till 1908.

Any other possibilities I wonder

that's a very good question. The rifle was converted over to the CLLE model in 1908, and has the date of 1910 stamped above the Enfield mark on the buttstock with the number "1" above that.

It may very well be that LD means someting completely different. I haven't any ideas what it could be.

Found out the other day that the 1 over the date of 1910 means that the rifle conversion was completed in January of 1910
