Commemorative item: glass with cryptic inscription

Postby SteveTurnbull » 25 Apr 2009 11:01

hello all,

please forgive me as I am new to teh subject and the forum; I am hoping someone can help me identify what appears to be a commemorative glass that is significant to the Boer War.

It has engraved on it the following:

VR

October 11th, 1899 (which I understand to be the date of declaration of war)

and the following letters

YUCIMNCIAN - the second letter could be 'E' as it is difficult to read.

Any information on the significance of this would be much appreciated, and thank you for letting me post.

regards
Steve

Hi Steve,

YUCIMNCIAN

Well that is an odd jumble of letters!! :D
Nothing immediately suggests itself I'm afraid.
Are there any images on the glass at all, or are these letters literally all there is?
Where did you source this glass from? Is it British do you think, or could it also be from the colonies (Canada, Australia, NZ)?

Hello and thanks for your reply!

I do not have the glass to hand - it belongs to an Aunt and we have no idea of its origins. The belief is that it belonged to my great, great Grandfather (amongst the other artefacts is a glass engraved to commemorate his wedding) - I will take a photograph of the glass and post a link, maybe that would help?

Steve,

A photo would be very helpful.

Look forward to seeing it.
