Mystery box

Postby Hallibag » 23 Jul 2017 03:40

Recently, I picked up an interesting box. I was told it was an ammo box from WW1 but I have serious doubts about this. As you'll see in the photos, it's made of galvanised steel, with all joints soldered. There's a handle on top, and a circular hole. Painted on two sides is V.R., which I presume is the Royal cypher of Queen Victoria. Someone made an effort to scratch these out but they're still visible. The box is 12" tall, 11" long and 7 1/2" wide. It looks military, but not like any ammunition box that I've ever seen. I'm wondering, could it be a steam chest for an early, water cooled machine gun, presumably from around the time of the Boer War?

If not a steam chest, does anyone know what this box might be?
