William Murray 1st Gordon Highlanders uniform

Postby Lowreyguy17 » 14 Mar 2017 02:03

Hello,

William Murray served with the 1st Battalion Gordon Highlanders SN# 3464 during the Boer War. He was killed on June 19 1901 in Machavie, South Africa. I have attached a photo of William with his wife & young daughter taken around 1900. The other photo I believe to be William also. I am hoping someone can help me authenticate his uniform and possibly recognize the location of where this photo was taken.

Thank you kindly

Hi there. Your second picture is definitely Gordons,.... the first is a Lance-Corporal (the next rank above Private) of the Black Watch (I'd put it in the post Boer war - pre Great War time frame, as he has a Wolseley helmet and what might be a 1903 waist belt, but perhaps post great war???)... I'd say not the same man. I'm sure others will be along to add and clarify.
Cheers,
Rob

Hello Rob,
I appreciate your reply. The owner of this collection was a bit skeptical as well. Thank you again for your comments and expertise.

As Rob says.

Also the fellow in khaki seems to have got younger and shed a fine moustache. The picture looks as if it was taken in garrison rather than on active service.

2 BW arrived in India from South Africa in December 1902 and remained until the outbreak of the Great War. 1 BW went out in 1919 and stayed until 1936, stationed mostly in the Punjab and North West Frontier.

Hello,

Thank you for your comments as well. Yes, it does look like a garrison in the background. I'll try to find out which family member may have served in the Black Watch. Interesting information, thanks for the education.
