South Africa Field Force

Postby cr1tical » 02 Feb 2017 11:02

I have an artilleryman who was recalled from the reserve after his service with the colours to serve with (from his record) "South Africa Field Force" Jan 1900-Jan 1901.

Was this a specific formation or simply an umbrella term for our force in South Africa?

Just an umbrella term, the medal rolls will reveal which unit(s) he served with.

Thanks but therein lies the problem. I haven't been able to find him on the medal rolls. He was Gnr Jonathan Wharmsby. His record shows South Africa 3 Jan 00 to 28 Jan 01. His battery was 20 Battery apart from the Depot where he started and finished. His record has nothing recorded in the medals area. Are you able perhaps to find him or perhaps his dates didn't qualify him??

Morning Max

I agree his records are quite clear that he served in SA during the war. No medals being recorded is a nuisance not proof of anything.

I can't immediately locate him in the medal rolls on Ancestry but their
index is not perfect.

Have you searched the 20th bty roll?

Yes and Yes!! Many thanks for the steer, don't know why I didn't find him before although he does suffer from his name being mispelled often - Many thanks indeed again, two additional eyes always help!

I believe I may have found him serving with the 20th Battery RFA, service No. 66072, QSA clasps for Cape Colony and Orange Free State.

Yes that is him, I should have made clear in my earlier post that I had found him. Thanks anyway for your interest. (He also has the clasp "Belfast").
