Neck Curtain

Postby AlexReece » 12 Oct 2016 09:44

Hello Fellow Members

I'm currently renovating an old Boer War Repo FS Helmet from the 80s, and wish to make a neck curtain for it. I have some old Khaki Drill to use for the project but I'm unsure of the original size of these neck curtains. Also I see some where fixed to the helmet in various ways ?

Has anybody go an original to show and if possible post the size for me, many thanks.

Regards Alex

Hi Alex,

If you are looking to do a neck curtain for Boer War, you may want something different than the long tie on and often quilted neck curtains worn in the Sudan in 1898 or the quite wide ones worn the Northwest Frontier 1897 for the Tirah campaign. I believe there were tie on KD neck curtains worn in the Boer War, but I tend to see shorter neck curtains worn stitched to the bottom/inside of the helmet cover or tucked under a puggarree and this often with the home service helmets worn because of the shortage of foreign service helmets. The home service helmets did not provide much sun protection so they needed extra puggarree and often curtains. I have attached a few pictures here that illustrate this common boer war neck curtain. They show how the curtain is stiched to the helmet cover itself. I think I have some better images on my home computer as well. These images are mostly from common stereoview cards along with a study of Pvt. Dibble from the old Green Howards museum website.

Best,

Sam

Hello Sam

Many thanks for that info and those images, I have some spare KD cloth and just wanted a estimate on the size of the curtain I think I now have a good idea, seems a few different variations was worn. I shall probably go with the curtain under the pugg as I don't have a cover for the helmet.

Thanks Sam

Alex.

Alex,

Here's a link to an older thread in this forum where pittpiper and and I discuss the same subject. viewtopic.php?f=19&t=7577&p=33232&hilit=neck+curtain#p33232

Attached are some further pics that answer your initial question regarding measurements. I hope this helps.

James

Hi Alex,

No it's not string. The best I can equate it to is a modern day shoelace, 1/4 inch wide, or there about. Alex, these neck curtains were of a finer weave cotton drill type material. Not the same robust drill material as the KD frocks.
