Western Cavalry Scouts

Postby Bushman » 02 Aug 2016 05:08

I noticed for sale on the internet recently a badge for The Western Cavalry Scouts which the seller was touting as a Boer War badge. This seems fraudulent as I can find no reference to such a unit. Making me doubly suspicious is the fact it appears to be based on the 1st pattern Australian Commonwealth Horse badge. Likewise I find no reference to any such Australian unit even in Militia service. So any clues or am I correct in thinking that this is a bodgy.

This expired auction has a good one :

The one you refer to is in lesser condition though their estimate is up there with one in fine condition. The Salesroom badge looks to be less collectable or it's a poor photo. Condition is everything.

So what were the Western Cavalry Scouts then? Its all good to have a badge but without a provenance its fairly pointless

Interesting - Google "Western Cavalry Scouts" and the only hits that come up are for the badges under discussion and toy soldiers for the American Indian wars.

I've never heard of the unit for the ABW.

Presumably badge fakers can also put a maker's name on the reverse to enhance "authenticity"?

Nothing but listings for the badge. Either a fake or made in expectation that a regiment was being named this and never was.
Has an Australian look to it, similar to their army badge.
