2nd Btn Durham Light Infantry.......

For all discussions relating to the Egyptian and Sudanese campaigns fought between 1882 and 1898.

2nd Btn Durham Light Infantry.......

Has anyone got an interest in the 2nd Btn DLI?

I'm aware they were stationed in Gibraltar, from August 1882 the 2nd Battalion was sent to the garrison the Mediterranean, being split between Gibraltar and Malta, it was reunited in March 1883 at Gibraltar. In 1885 the 2nd Battalion was transferred to Egypt.

Am I right in thinking that they spent from March 1883 to their deployment in 1885 to Egypt, in Gibraltar?

Distribution of the British Army has them stationed at Gibraltar...
Feburary 1884
October 1884

Having been there since 1882, but there not listed as being there in August 1882 (and by June 1885 they've gone).

I assume to Egypt?

Can anyone confirm for me when they sailed to Egypt and was it from Gibraltar?

T.C. Mills' site regiments.org, which remained under construction until it was archived- http://web.archive.org/web/200712212224 ... nf/106.htm
has these details:

1882 Gibraltar & Malta
1885 Sudan
1887 India: Poona

The Wikipedia article, citing these regimental histories:
Vane, The Hon. W L (1913). The Durham Light Infantry. The United Red and White Rose. Naval and Military Press. ISBN 9781845741464.
Ward, S G P (1962). Faithful. The Story of the Durham Light Infantry. Naval and Military Press. ISBN 9781845741471.

-states that the 2nd battalion DLI , having been reunited at Gibraltar in June 1883, was sent to Egypt in 1885 and defended lines of communication before taking part in the battle of Ginnis in December 1885. The battalion sailed from Suez for India in January 1887.

Basic, but I hope it is helpful.
