Abdullah al-Taashi, the Khalifa

For all discussions relating to the Egyptian and Sudanese campaigns fought between 1882 and 1898.

Abdullah al-Taashi, the Khalifa

Postby Mark » 08 Oct 2015 09:29

Following on from my recent question about the Madhi of Sudan, can anyone point me in the right direction as to background information about Abdullah al-Taashi, the Khalifa? Again, I am looking for information about him personally, his early life and up to his meeting with Muhammed Ahmed.

Also, does anyone know if a photograph of Abdullah al-Taashi exists, and if so where? If not, are there any known Victorian period illustrations of him that appeared in newspapers or similar?

Thanks in advance.

You might try Slatin Pasha - Fire and Sword in the Sudan for passing references to the K's early life. Also Fr Orhrwalders's book. 'Ten Yrs Captivity...' I should imagine both will be available online...if they are not then do not consider this a recommendation that you buy them, because given your particular focus they are long shots.

I have never seen a photo of him. Been in his house though.

As ever

Thanks, Mike! I have found and downloaded both Slatin and Orhrwalders's books from archive.org.
